Description
**First Time At Auction**
Greece, Hellenistic Period, late 3rd to mid-2nd century BCE. A tiny terracotta transport amphora - a wonderful miniature version of the traditionally quite sizeable forms. This piece presents a piriform body with a dramatically pointed base for setting in the sand, a gently flaring cylindrical neck resolving in a over-folded rim, and twin curved handles joining neck to shoulder. Larger examples were created to store olive oil or wine and transport these goods by ship or over land - making a major contribution to the Mediterranean economy. A sweet and petite homage to this classic vessel form. Size: 4.5" H (11.4 cm); 4.875" H (12.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
