Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Nayarit, San Sebastian, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built terracotta anthropomorphic figure standing atop a pair of delineated legs covered in a pair of white-painted trousers. Both arms are curled and held against a flat torso decorated with a two-tone painted poncho which appears to be draped over planar shoulders. The enlarged head displays an expressive countenance comprised of recessed eyes, a prominent nose decorated with a simple nose ring, perky ears, and a finely-striated coiffure meant to imitate hair. The elongated shape of the skull suggests the practice of ritual cranial deformation, a practice common throughout ancient Mesoamerica. Remains of the original red and white pigment are observable across all surfaces of this wonderful example! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 3.75" W x 6.25" H (9.5 cm x 15.9 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection
