Description
CIVIL WAR PERIOD HAND-SEWN 24-STAR AMERICAN NATIONAL FLAG, likely an exclusionary example, showing signs of extended use, possibly in battle, dark-blue wool canton with double-appliqued cotton stars, sewn-over cotton hoist retaining original loops, two retaining leather ties, cotton binding throughout. Archivally mounted in a custom frame. Reserve. Circa 1863. 42" x 50 1/4" object, 52 1/2" x 60 1/4" OA.
Wear, discoloration, losses, and old repairs, particularly at fly end, possibly shortened. Upper hoist loop an old rope replacement, possibly in the period. Not examined out of frame.
