Large Richard Burnside (b. 1944) Folk Art Metal Lantern. Signed inside, the lantern features his "Kings" and "Bugs". Measures approx. 14"x14"x21". Weight 8 pds. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1944, Richard Burnside moved to South Carolina when he was a child. He has held various jobs throughout his life, ranging from store clerk to chef. Burnside began painting around 1980, while employed as a chef in a restaurant in Charlotte, NC. In 1983, he moved to Pendleton, South Carolina, where he now resides. His paintings of kings, queens, tigers, wolves, and cats are allegorical expressions of the African-American cultural experience. The figures in his paintings are often surrounded by snakes, symbols or bugs he calls the “Roman Alphabet.”, also repeating method of combining dots can be seen in most of his work. Richard's work is featured in the House of Blues bars and additional pieces hang in private collections, The Smithsonian, The White House and others worldwide.
