Description
WILLIAM WENDT (AMERICAN, 1865-1946) LANDSCAPE, pastel on paper laid on canvas, a luminous depiction of haystacks and verdant rolling hills in summer, pencil-signed and dated lower left, partially concealed by current mat, on likely original stretcher. Housed under glass in an old gilt frame. Reserve. 1895. 12 1/4 x 18 1/4" sight, 20 5/8" x 26 5/8" OA.
Excellent overall condition. Frame with minor wear.
Provenance: Purchased from John Dodson, Easton, MD.
Ex-collection of Edward Carson Waller III, USN (ret.), presumably acquired while Mr. Waller was a resident of California.
Catalogue Note: Born in Germany, William Wendt (1865-1946) arrived in the United States in 1880 as a teenager. Largely self-taught, Wendt attended night classes at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1890's and began exhibiting his work around the same time, gaining wide recognition. Close friends with fellow artist George Garner Symonds (1863-1930), the two began to travel to California and abroad starting in 1894. After Wendt's marriage to sculptor Julian Bracken (b. 1871), the couple moved to Southern California, where they remained for the rest of their lives. A devoted plein-air painter, Wendt maintained a life-long fascination with the natural world. The present work, a rare pastel, demonstrates the artist's keen interest in light and color.
Excellent overall condition. Frame with minor wear.
