BIRGER SANDZEN (SWEDISH / AMERICAN, 1871-1954) LANDSCAPE PRINT, woodblock on paper, signed "B - S - N" in plate, pencil signed and inscribed to lower margin "Kansas Creek / With Warm regards to Thornton Oakley 1940 / Birger Sandzen". Housed in likely original frame retaining Philadelphia framer's label. 1940. 6 1/2" x 9 1/4" sight, 14 1/2" x 18 1/2" OA.
Etching in good overall condition with moderate toning. Frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Property from the estate of John Clarence and Nina Deal Fogg, Kennett Square, PA.

Catalogue Note: Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) was an important Western American landscape artist of the 20th century. Born in Sweden, Sandzen eventually settled in Lindsborg, Kansas, where he sustained a successful career as an artist, educator, designer, and illustrator. Thornton Oakley (1881-1953), the recipient of the present woodblock, was a fellow artist of the period, who studied with Howard Pyle (1853-1911) and worked mostly as an illustrator, often focusing on urban or industrial scenes.
