Roman Bronze Chest Latches - Matched Pair
Roman Bronze Chest Latches - Matched Pair
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful matched pair of cast bronze chest latches, each a long, rectangular shape, with one end folded over to form a hook and the other end terminating in a flourish. The face of each is incised and stippled with pretty motifs of blooming flowers with large leaves. A small hole drilled through the folded over top of each allowed it to be attached to a chest, while small hooks at the ends of the flourishes probably served as attachments for latches. Each is sturdy, but, because of its decoration, conveys a pretty delicateness, and together they provide a vision of what a Roman wooden chest would have looked like. Size: 1.2" W x 5.6" H (3 cm x 14.2 cm); 6.95" H (17.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Davis Collection, Houston, Texas, USA

Condition
Smooth, olive green patina on both, with excellent preservation of motifs. Some iron patina near top of each, probably from resting with something iron for many years.
