A FRENCH SECOND EMPIRE ORMOLU MOUNTED BLACK WALNUT PIER MIRROR, CIRCA 1850-1870, in the Neoclassical taste, the triangular pediment centering an ormolu mount of Cupid riding a lion's back, over a cavetto frieze with applied parcel gilt and gesso molded lotus bloom border, over an inset panel centering a figural ormolu mount of Ares and Hercules offering a laurel wreath and olive branch into a flaming urn, above a wide beveled rectangular mirror. Height: 65" Width: 20" Depth: 2"

Some cracks to the veneer, chips, losses, scratches, exposure to woodworm and general surface wear throughout. The mirror replaced. A lower corner block now loosened, some patina on the ormolu and gilt decoration. The gesso with some cracks and losses, and some separation at the joints, but otherwise in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
