Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A lovely hollow-cast redware vessel depicting a seated shamanic figure on a flat base with extended legs. The figure has a stocky torso, rounded shoulders with hanging sinuous arms, a scalloped collar with six petals, and a thick neck. The visage is composed of raised almond-shaped eyes, an enormous nose, arching eye brows, an incised mouth with drilled corners and curved into a slight smile, and perforated, bar-shaped ears, all beneath a horned headband with an upturned spout rim. The exterior of the vessel is enveloped in a red-orange slip, making this an elegant example from the ancient Colima! Size: 8" W x 12.625" H (20.3 cm x 32.1 cm).
