Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche I, ca. 300 BCE to 100 CE. A bichrome stirrup vessel of red and cream hues in the shape of an Andean mountainside with a caracol (snail) shell and two slithering serpents working their way up the peaks and a painted ladder to the top of the central peak. The iconography of this piece relates to the practice of ritual sacrifices atop the Andes by the ancients of Peru. A fascinating example! Size: 8" L x 7.25" W x 5.625" H (20.3 cm x 18.4 cm x 14.3 cm)

Losses to tips of two mountain peaks. Stirrup has been repaired and reattached with slight losses near the break lines as shown. Chips to the spout. Expected surface wear with scuffs, nicks, and areas of pigment loss commensurate with age.
