BOOKS: Helps Cloister and the Crowd 1835 inscribed, [Sir Arthur Helps] Thoughts in the Cloister and the Crowd. Henry Wix, London. 1835. First edition of the author's first book. Hardcover. 4"w x 6.25h. [6], 111 pages. Inscribed "from the author" on half-title page. Full leather binding stamped "BOUND BY RIVIERE AND SON" with elaborate gold tooling, gilded page edges. Leather bookplates stamped in gold of Anna E. Clark, Henry W. Poor, and Adolph Lewisohn. Sir Arthur Helps (English, 1813-1875) was a writer, dean of the Privy Council and a Cambridge Apostle.

Notes/Literature: Huguette Marcelle Clark (1906-2011) was an heiress and philanthropist, who became well known again late in life as a recluse, living in a hospital for more than 20 years while her mansions remained empty. She was an accomplished artist and musician, having studied under famous portrait painter Tadeusz Styka, and her paintings were exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington in 1925
