Description
A Russian or Ukrainian partially gilded ceramic icon plaque, 19th century, molded in two registers with images of Jesus Christ, Joseph, the Mother of God, and St. John the Evangelist holding a chalice containing a serpent, referring to a story in which he drank a cup of poison without ill effect, above figures of Love (Lyubov), Hope (Nadezhda), Faith (Vera), and Wisdom (Sofia), each roundel with a molded bead border, the ground between them gilded, and with identifying shields with cerulean blue glaze; the outer border with a molded acanthus leaf tip border gilded throughout, the entire plaque held within a gilt wood frame with carved seraphim in the four corners, further contained in a Baroque style glass-fronted kiot. 1510-019. Plaque 8 5/8 x 10 3/4 in. (21.9 x 27.3 cm); Frame: 14 1/4 x 16 in. (36.2 x 40.6 cm).
