Description
Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, third quarter 18th century, ovoid jug with ribbed strap handle, decorated on the front with slip-trailed "watchspring" design featuring two spiraling cogs joined by short, wavy lines above and below. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jug features an exceptionally early spout construction with single, deeply-incised groove, relating it to works by the influential potter, Adam States, Sr., active in New Jersey, Manhattan, NY, and Greenwich, CT, during the mid 18th century. While lacking other characteristics to support a States attribution, this jug's distinctive spout dates it possibly earlier than most watchspring-decorated pieces known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Very nice condition considering age and origin. An approximately 4 1/4" Y-shaped line on reverse, emanating from a small in-the-firing stone ping. Shallow chipping to base. Some typical firing flaws to surface.
