Description
A carved wooden mask with highly exaggerated brow and classic facial treatment and form, with a heavy kaolin clay surface pigment accented with black pigment details. This mask is known as "Pwoom Itok" and represented the wise old man at ritual dances. Kuba peoples, Congo Africa. The mask measures 11 x 7.5 inches ( 15 inches tall on custom display stand)Ex Prof. Charles Bordogna collection, New Jersey. Professor Charles Bordogna served as curator of the SMA Fathers African Art Museum in tenafly , NJ from 1982 until 1996. Bordogna is the author of several publications on African Art, including "Masks of Liberia", " A Tanzanian Tradition" and "Surfaces: Ritual Application on African Sculpture" (Co-authored with Leonard Kahan, P.Imperato, D. Page) as well as other text's.
