Description
AN EDO PARTY GIRL dressed in an elegant checkered kimono, has slipped away from a frenetic party that can be glimpsed in silhouetted shadows on the shoji behind her. She cools off on the veranda where she discreetly employs a toothpick. Eizan's early work comes close to emulating Utamaro, but there is a decidedly more decadent flavor to his women when they are compared to the often unapproachable Utamaro bijin. The figure shown in this design possesses a charm typical of the first quarter of the nineteenth century when Edo was enjoying a period of prolonged permissiveness. Eizan works are represented in numerous collections, including the British Museum, Ashmolean, Fine Arts (San Francisco), Honolulu, Stanford, Minneapolis, and Cincinnati.
