Item Details
Description
A marvelous Greek terracotta relief scene, c. 5th Century BC, mold-made and partially in the round, depicting two women seated on ornate chairs and facing each other. The woman appear to be in conversation as they both spin a fiber, likely wool, into yarn. The woman on the right holds a spindle near her head in her left hand and holds a distaff off to the side in her right hand. The woman to the left holds her spindle in her left hand as she pulls fiber from an object sitting on the ground to her right. Each woman wears a chiton, waist band, armlets and bracelets, their hair elaborately styled and wearing earrings. The relief is extremely well detailed with light deposits. L: 6 1/2 in (16.7cm), H: 6 2/3 in (16.9cm). This type of terracotta relief, partially in the round, would likely be found affixed to a large funerary vessel for a wealthy individual, on which these scenes would project from the body of the vessel. Ex estate of Seward Kennedy, New York. Mr. Kennedy worked for decades as a lawyer for the Mobil Corporation, and acquired his collection throughout decades of travel beginning in the 1950's.
