Description
Watercolor and ink on paper, hanging scroll, featuring mountainous landscape, signed and attr. Huang Binhong (Chinese, 1865-1955), inscribed with 2 artist seals. Huang Binhong painter was well-known for his freehand landscapes. “The ancients often remarked that in painting it is better to be clumsy than clever,” he once wrote. “Some may even say that the clever can also be clumsy, because to understand that cleverness can lead to stupidity is to be close to the ways of heaven.” Born on January 27, 1865 in Jinhua, China to a family of artists and scholars. As a young man, his anti-government sentiments led him to flee to Shanghai, where he edited art books and magazines. In 1934, he wrote Huafa Yaozhi (Principles of Painting), in this work, the artist explained the techniques he used for ink and brush. Huang’s artistic style matured fully during this time period. During the end of his care his eyesight began to weaken, helping him to further break away from more traditional depictions of naturalistic form. The artist held his first solo retrospective when he was 80 years old. Huang died on March 25, 1955. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in London, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
