Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Near East, North Syria, the Levant, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A lovely gathering of five hand-built terracotta fragments of larger figures. Two small light-orange heads have ovoid eyes, petite noses, and tall foreheads. A slate-gray seated figure has long legs, attenuated arms, and an integral chair; the chair legs as well as the head are sadly missing. Last are two standing female fertility idols, indicated by the applied disc-shaped breasts, with wide bases, cylindrical bodies, and nubbin-shaped arms raised towards the sky. A wonderful collection from ancient Near East! Size of largest (fertility idol): 3.875" H (9.8 cm).
Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
