Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A gorgeous, semi-translucent Roman glass vessel of golden amber hues with vertical canes of opaque white glass swirled throughout the drop-shaped body including its tubular neck and splayed lip. This type of ancient glass - known as "marbled", "color-band", or "mosaic" glass - is created through a process of casting and blowing which allows the artist to weave strands of different-colored glass throughout the composition. The slightly concave base and smooth pontil scar allow the vessel to rest upright; a pinched neckline imbues it with a refined presentation, and areas of faint silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence provide a burst of color. Vessels like this example would have been used to contain scented oils or other precious liquids by the ancients. Size: 3.25" H (8.3 cm)

Small internal fissure on the neck that is very difficult to see with the naked eye. Normal surface wear and internal bubbles inherent to the glass blowing process. Beautiful areas of iridescence as well. Overall excellent.
