Revolutionary War Captain Who Fought at Bunker Hill
MICHAEL MCCLARY (1752-1824). Revolutionary War Captain who Fought at Bunker Hill in John Stark’s regiment, where his Uncle Major Andrew McClary was killed, participated in the capture of General Burgoyne, later New Hampshire Adjutant General and United States Federal Marshall for New Hampshire (1802-1824).
February 6, 1794-Dated Whiskey Rebellion Period, Autograph Letter Signed, “Mich McClray A. Gen.”, with Integral Transmittal Cover, 1 page, measuring 7.5” x 9.5”, at Exeter, (NH), Fine. This letter is nicely handwritten on handmade laid period paper having some edge chips, small fold splits, minor paper loss where opened. yet easily readable. The letter is addressed to: "General Moses Leavitt, North Hampton" and reads; “Sir - The law of this State provides that a return of the Militia be made into the Secretaries Office by the first day of May Annually - you are therefore requested to cause a return of your Brigade to be made to me by the first day of April next agreeably to the blank forms for that purpose - (Signed) Mich McClray A. Gen.”. Likely written in regard to militia activity during the 1791-1794 “Whiskey Rebellion” Period where the Army was active in its historic suppression by the fledging new Federal government. A scarce signature of this historic Patriot from New Hampshire.
Michael McClary served as the New Hampshire State Adjutant General, until his appointment as United States Marshal for the District of New Hampshire in May 1802 and served until 1824.

Born on Dec. 26, 1752 in Epsom, NH, Michael McClary entered the Army at the age of 23. Michael McClary was then appointed ensign to Capt. Dearborn’s company in John Stark’s regiment, and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill, where his Uncle Maj. Andrew McClary was killed. Michael McClary was later promoted to Captain.

Capt. McClary saw service in some of the severest engagements and participated in the capture of Burgoyne. Capt. McClary served in the Continental Army for 4 years until he retired in 1779 due to health problems. Michael McClary then returned to New Hampshire and aided in forming the new state government and held the office of Adjutant General for 21 years. Michael McClary died in the old family mansion in Epsom, NH on Mar. 27, 1824 and was buried in the little churchyard at Epsom by the side of the Hon. John McClary.
