Title: Three scarce ephemeral items of San Francisco Chinatown, 1887 and 1987
Place Published: San Francisco
Publisher:
Date Published: 1887-1987
Description:
• San Francisco News Letter, Christmas Number, December 1887. Original wrappers with unusual color graphic of a Chinese woman in Chinatown on front cover. 9 x 12”. A defective copy, though apparently as issued - inexplicably lacking Pages 11-62 (of 78).
• Chinatown Resource Center. Tenth Anniversary Report, 1977-1987. Original pictorial wrappers. 24 unnumbered pages. Illustrated.
• [Poster] Chinese Community Housing Corporation. . First Annual Benefit Dance. Black Mask Affair. Halloween Night, October 31, 1987,. Armenian Community Center. 9 x 13.5” Illustrated with graphic by artist Hank Wong.
The 1887 cover is unusual as a sympathetic (rather than a racist stereotypic) drawing of a Chinese woman. Even during the earlier Kearney era, the editor of the News Letter was known for his pro-Chinese sympathies. Surprisingly, the 1987 imprints may be as scarce as the publication of a century earlier. We could locate no institutional copy of either the Report of Poster.
