Description
**First Time At Auction**
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ayutthaya period, ca. 15th century CE. A beautiful and serene example of a cast-bronze Buddha head. The face is wonderfully-expressive, with downcast eyes, a petite nose, and full lips. The drooping-lobed ears are highly detailed as well, as is the hair, which is stylized in a distinctive curled pattern, with a prominent flaming ushnisha that ends in a ring with an opening - probably made to insert a larger, flame-like finial as seen in similar examples. The clear brow line and demarcated border around the hair are characteristics of typical Ayutthaya-period Buddha depictions. This sensitive illustration of the Buddha is enveloped in a verdant green patina with a few tiny remains of gilding that only adds to the overall beauty of this example. Size: 4.15" W x 5.25" H (10.5 cm x 13.3 cm); 9.7" H (24.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Clay core has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.
Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection
