1746 Pluche Spectacle Domestication Textiles Inventions Clothing Farms Machines
Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his land mark work of natural history ‘Spectacle of Nature’. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit. There was a time when Pluche himself called it ‘La physique des enfants’ or ‘physics of the children’. The main themes portrayed in this work are not simply of the physical, natural world. Take for instance the first volume – Pluche writes, “We are here only to be virtuous” – a moral vision on how we are to live. ‘Spectacle’ became a pragmatic work of theology through the lens of plants, animals, and the natural world.
This volume from the complete set of ‘Spectacle’ includes many fascinating topics on the particulars of specific work trades and jobs such as lathe-working, wool and leather making, and origins of domestication, development of formal education, marriage, farming, clothes making, using animal leathers as clothing, tactics and suppressing beggars, and building furniture.
