A Note On Cuvier's Life: Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) was a superb natural scientist of his time, almost single-handedly founding the science of Vertebrate Paleontology and firmly establishing the extinction of past life forms. He studied at the Carolinian Academy in Stuttgart (1784-1788), and survived the tumultuous French Revolution, avoiding most of the violence in Paris by tutoring in Normandy. He was appointed General of Public Education and State Councilor by Napoleon, and has the distinction of serving three different, opposing French governments (Revolutionary, Napoleonic, and monarchy) without losing his head. By the time of his death in 1832, he had been knighted, made a Baron and a Peer of France.
