Description
The FLOWERING PLANTS, GRASSES, SEDGES and FERNS of GREAT BRITAIN and Their Allies The CLUB MOSSES, PEPPERWORTS and HORSETAILS by Anne PRATT VOLUME II With Descriptions of HUNDREDS of SPECIES of FLOWERING PLANTS
ILLUSTRATED in 38 SINGLE-SIDED COLOR PLATES!
Undated: Published about 1870 by Frederick Warne & Co, London and Scribner, Welford & Armstrong, NY
This rare and unique volume, Vol. II Only of six volumes of the original set, consists of hundreds of descriptions of species of Flowering Plants and 38 attractive Single-Sided COLOR PLATES by one of the most successful female botanical authors of the Victorian era. Anne Pratt's books were well composed, supported with handsome, accurate illustrations, and constituted a major contribution to the advancement of flower study, especially among the general public. This volume is an Ex-Library copy bound in original green publisher's cloth, decorated in red and black, with gilt blocking. All edges are gilt. Spine has small tears top and bottom (see images); foxing affects only the two endpapers, and except for
the library stamp to each plate the color plates are remarkably clean with the bright, vivid colors characteristic of the early editions of this work. The 38 color plates in the book are due to the work of William Dickes & Company, who created the thousands of plate blocks required for printing in color using the "Baxter process". This special process for producing illustrations in color combines a lithographic key plate that printed the main features of the design, which was then followed by various colors applied through a succession of wood blocks.
This volume is one of an early edition, with the quality of the color printing being exceptional because, as this popular work was reprinted, the plates became worn and the printing quality deteriorated.
DIMENSIONS: 6.5 inches x 9 inches x 1 inch
