Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A gorgeous woven textile bag - probably made from camelid hair fibers - covered with brilliant blue, bright orange, and deep black feathers in horizontal bands that wrap around the bag. Included with the piece is a small ear of corn, a staple of Nazca agriculture, that was found inside of the bag. To create this amazing item, ancient artisans folded the tips of quills over a cord and tied them in place, then tied strings of feathers bound in that way to a backing cloth. The birds came from the Amazon, indicating a trade in exotic goods - and possibly exotic animals - across Peru. Size of bag: 5.5" W x 11.75" H (14 cm x 29.8 cm)

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection

#136724
Condition
Dark patina from age and handling on the exposed textile. The feathers are in fragile condition, with some small losses, but overall their preservation is remarkable given their age.
