Near East, Judaica, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely hammered sterling silver spice container in the form of a slender fish with a bulb-shaped head, a body composed of seventeen articulated ringlets and a separate tail. Each of the body panels is incised and formed to resemble scales, and the tail bears several concentric lines which imbue it with a flowing appearance. The mouth of the fish contains a small plug attached to a chain which prohibits the unwanted spillage of any spices contained within. A pair of faceted scarlet-red glass eyes are placed within petite bezels and mimic the beady eyes of aquatic life. A small loop beneath the head holds a curved suspension hook so the vessel can be hung when not in use. Size: 6.625" L x 0.875" W (16.8 cm x 2.2 cm); total weight: 52.7.

The body is comprised of 97% silver and has traces of gilding on the tail. The head is comprised of 93% silver with traces of gilding as well.
