Description
late 19th or early 20th century, the sculptures are of two men, one is a religious ascetic and the other a Buddhist monk, are finely carved from wood and painted with polychrome pigments in decorative designs with highlights of gilt, they both stand on a rocky mountain surface with halos behind their heads, raised from a very intricately carved pedestal lacquered and painted with gilt in swirling clouds, these are further raised on a black pedestal with carved window with a Japanese floral pattern design, the block bases are not attached to the figures, these two Buddhist devotional sculptures would have been kept in a home shrine.

Loss to fingers of monk; halos have been repaired to their posts; some surface loss to figures; general wear.
