Description
James Dexter Havens(1900-1960)is one of the best known graphic artists of America and won national recognition. He had an infinite capacity for taking pains which is a well known definition of genius. His keen artistic sense, his love of nature and the whimsical humor which is one of his distinguishing characteristics, brought him well deserved success. He had commissions to create the membership print for the Prairie Print Makers, the Woodcut Society of New York and the American Color Print Society. He was an associate member of the National Academy. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Museum. and many others. This charming wood block print, entitled Christmas Fern, is beautifully rendered with two nuthatch birds, ferns and fall leaves amongst snow. The scene, in green and rust earthy tones, suggests Christmas is on the way. Dimensions of scene are 2 5/8" wide x 3.5" high. With frame and mat, 8 1.4" high x 7" wide. Framed with an acid free mat and backing, all archival. Signed Christmas Fern James D. Havens AH (signed by family member after his death). Excellent condition. No foxing, cropping or problems.
