Description
Roman, later Imperial period, reign of Constantius II, ca. 337 to 361 CE, Type of 351 to 355 CE. From the Nicomedia Mint. Obverse: FL IVL CONSTANT - IVS PERP AVG, helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear and shield decorated with horseman motif. Reverse: GLORIA REIPVBLICAE / SMNT. Roma and Constantinopolis, with foot set upon prow and holding scepter, seated facing one another on double throne, holding between them a shield inscribed VOT / XXX / MVLT / XXXX in four lines. Constantius II was the third son of the first Christian emperor, Constantine the Great. Upon the death of his father, Constantius II became emperor. Constantius made a strong effort to promote Christianity throughout the empire. At the same time he imposed severe restrictions against the Jews. He also imposed the death penalty for those who continued to practice pagan sacrifices. He was also responsible for closing all pagan temples. Size: 0.75" W (1.9 cm); 4.48 grams
