Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A large wheel-thrown pottery skyphos with a planar base, a dramatically-expanding body, a lightly flared rim, and a pair of laterally-projecting handles. The decorative red-figure program depicts a standing, left-facing woman in profile with a morose countenance, wearing a flowing himation and a kekryphalos adorning her hair. The other side exhibits a standing man facing right in profile with a perturbed expression, wearing a long himation and sash, with puffy hair secured with a thin diadem. A large pair of stylized palmettes flanked by tall-stalked flowers separate the two figures, and areas of the flowers are adorned with additional white pigment. Black glaze and silvery iridescence surrounds the unadorned areas. Size: 9" W x 6.5" H (22.9 cm x 16.5 cm).

Provenance: private Minnesota, USA collection
