The manuscript at the rear includes two verses: "Ode Horatiana, metro novo, ad Jacobium Beattie, LL.D ad Melodiam "Tulloch-gorum," and, "Carmen Bellicosum Concionale...". Published by members of an Edinburgh social club who attempted to translate, facetiously, some old Scottish folk poetry into Latin. One of those poems is about golf titled "A Song in Praise of Gowfing," which is also mentioned in the preface, the chorus of which goes: "Thy good example, Phœbus, we‘ll cheerfully follow/Haud enim semper arcum tendit Apollo/And long will this Assembly mix Seria cum joco,/By meeting at the Golf-Hall, desipere in loco." Harry B. Wood makes special mention of the volume on page 30 of Golfing Curios and "The Like," noting the "curious" book "is also instructive, as illustrating the enthusiasm with which the game was pursued and immortalised at the beginning of the last century..." Murdoch p.12. Provenance: From the collection of Theodore Prussing LeVino.
