Condition: Good condition.

Provenance: From a California collection.
About the artist: Manuel Neri (1930- ) was born in Sanger, CA to immigrant parents who left Mexico during political unrest following the Mexican Revolution. In 1950 Mr. Neri began studies in art in the Bay Area including at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, and at California School of Fine Arts. Mr. Neri studied under other important Bay Area artists including Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, Frank Lobdell and Peter Voulkos. In the late 1950s, Manuel Neri was a member of the artist-run cooperative gallery, Six Gallery in San Francisco, along with other influential San Francisco Bay Area artists Joan Brown, Jay DeFeo and Bruce Conner. Mr. Neri was involved early on with the Beat movement in San Francisco, including being a member of the Bruce Conner’s Rat Bastard Protective Association. Neri went on to teach sculpture and ceramics at California School of Fine Arts from 1959–1965, then taught classes in the art department at UC Berkeley in 1963-1964. He was later a member of the art department faculty at UC Davis from 1965-1999. Neri has received many awards for his work and is a major art figure in the San Francisco Bay Area art scene.
