Description
Brass plaque base of frame Sir Godfrey Kneller 1646-1723. Portrait of young woman with long brown hair and blue eyes with draped red robe over white ruffled blouse. Gilt oval mat. European stretcher measures 30 inches x 25 inches. Oval image measures 28 inches x 23 inches. Carved into back of frame on the bottom R.C.VOSE Boston #4254. Sir Godfrey Kneller (Germany/United Kingdom 1646-1723) and is known for aristocratic portrait painting and was the leading portrait painter in England during the 17th and early 18th centuries. He served as Court Painter from Charles II to George I. Among his major works were four portraits of Sir Isaac Newton; portraits of ten reigning European monarchs including King Louis XIV of France; a series of ten 'beauties' of the Courts of William III and of Charles II; and portraits of forty-eight leading members of the Kit-Kat Club, an exclusive English association of politicians, writers, attorneys and other professionals.
