Volumes I-XI of XV (July, 1868-July, 1873) in the first series. Edited by Bret Harte (until 1871) & others. (8vo) 23x14.5 cm (9x5¾") Ten of eleven volumes bound in green cloth, lettered in gilt on spine with a gilded California bear. Volume X in tan cloth with same lettering spine emblem.
Eleven of fifteen volumes of this important San Francisco literary magazine, edited by Bret Harte and the venue for the publication of some of his most famous early stories, including "The Luck of Roaring Camp" (which appeared in the second issue, August, 1868), "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," "Tennessee's Partner," "Plain Language from Truthful James," and others. Other contributor's included John Muir, Ina Coolbrith (an associate editor), and "Sam L. Clemens (Mark Twain)". Each volume with ownership marks and two signature chops on front free endpaper.
