Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Vicus, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A hand-built redware llama effigy vessel, the body of a bulbous, round-bottomed form, a softly corseted shoulder rising to a narrow mouth with an applied high strap handle presenting cream and red stripes attained via negative resist, the camelid's head showing an expressive visage protruding from one side, his curved tail in low relief on the other. The ancients of Peru did not have horses or cows; so llamas were incredibly important animals high in the Andes mountains. In addition to serving as beasts of burden, llamas provided them with wool, food, and a way to transport goods. Size: 9.375" W x 8.25" H (23.8 cm x 21 cm)

Handle repaired from three pieces and reattached to vessel. One ear reattached. Surface wear with slip losses commensurate with age. Nice mineral deposits and root marks. Old inventory label on bottom.
