Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two skillfully decorated pottery vessels from the West Mexican shaft tomb culture. Size of larger: 7.3" W x 5.9" H (18.5 cm x 15 cm)
The first vessel, an open-mouthed bowl, has a cream-colored interior with a zigzag pattern in red around its rim; the exterior presents additional zigzag and linear patterns. The concave body is adorned with a checkered pattern. The second vessel is a bulbous olla with a narrow, cylindrical spout. The exterior is painted a burnished dark red with linear, diamond, and triangular fine-line patterns in orange and white around its lower body. The diamond pattern culminates in a six-sided star radiating from the center of the base.
Provenance: Ex-Harvey Collection, acquired prior to 1972

Condition
The smaller of the two has been repaired from three large pieces. The other is intact with excellent remaining pigment.
