Description
A PRIMITIVE LOW RELIEF AND POLYCHROME WOOD SHIELD, POSSIBLY ASMAT TRIBE, PAPUA NEW GUINEA, EARLY/MID 20TH CENTURY, carved buttress root of the Mangrove tree, with applied reddish orange, black and white pigments, among tree kangaroo tail forms, verso a carved handle and in marker "L.R. Webb." Height: 67 1/2" Width: 19" Depth: 2 1/4" Provenance: Estate of Laura Gerow Bramlette, heiress of Morton D. May and the Mays Department Store fortune.
Condition
Some chips, breaks and losses, surface wear, loss of pigment, fading, and general wear, but overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
