Josef Scharl's work is less influenced by stylistic than by motivic diversity. In addition to numerous sociocritical topics, he also turned to landscape painting, still life and portraiture. After increasing awareness in the 1920s and 1930s, he was almost forgotten by his emigration to the US in Germany. Scharl did not return to Germany after the war. PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
