Description
"Joshua to Job, being a Continuation of the Old Testament in Art, and a companion volume to the Gospels in Art, and the Apostles in Art", edited by W. Shaw Sparrow, published by Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1906. First Edition.
There are many text illustrations and full-page plates including 19 plates to the "Book of Job" by William Blake
William Blake (1757-1827), born in 1757, nearly 70 years after Banyan's death, can now be seen in his true proportions ... he was a painter of the highest originality... He spent his life in the assiduous prosecution of his craft as an engraver on copper and of his art as writer and painter.
His first big venture as an illustrator was the series of 537 large watercolor designs for Young's "Night Thoughts", begun about 1795, and partly engraved in 1797. This was followed about 1801 by 114 water-colour drawings for the Poems of Thomas Gray, none of which were engraved. For many years after this Blake's main output as an illustrator was concerned with the works of Milton.
During the last years of his life, Blake was engaged on his most celebrated works, the "Illustrations of the Book of Job" and the unfinished series of over 100 large designs of Dante's "Inferno", upon which he was working at the time of his death in 1827.
