Description
The first edition with these illustrations following the de-luxe version printed for the First Editions Club at the Officica Bodoni in Verona.

"The Georgics", by Publius Virgilius Maro, translated into English Verse by John Dryden, with Introduction by George F. Whicher, illustrations by Bruno Bramanti, published by Heritage, 1953.

Publius Virgilius Maro's didactic poem on agriculture is translated in this edition from the Latin into English verse by John Dryden (1631-1700), and introduced by George F. Whicher. Notes by Dryden are also included. The brilliant translation is also satisfying English poetry.

"THE ARGUMENT--

The poet, in the beginning of this book, propounds the general design of each Georgic: and, after a solemn invocation of all the gods who are any way related to his subject, he addresses himself, in particular, to Augustus, whom he compliments with divinity; and after strikes into his business. He... describes the changes of the weather, with the signs in heaven and earth that forebode them; instances many of the prodigies that happened near the time of Julius Caesar's death; and shuts up all with a supplication to the gods for the safety of Augustus, and the preservation of Rome.

What makes a plenteous harvest, when to turn
The fruitful soil, and when to sow the corn;
The care of sheep, of oxen, and of kine;
And how to raise on elms the teeming vine;
The birth and genius of the frugal bee,
I sing, Maecenas, and I sing to thee.
Ye deities! who fields and plains protect,
Who rule the seasons, and the year direct...."

Bruno Bramanti (1897-1957). With Italo Zetti and Tranquillo Marangoni - though the latter in a very different style - Bramanti is one of the main modern exponents of wood engraving in Italy. His lyrical microcosms always have a still, magical quality and he exploited contrast to great effect.

Publius Vergilius Maro (70 BCE-19 BCE) later called Virgilius, and known in English as Virgil or Vergil, was a classical Roman poet. He was the author of epics in three modes: the Bucolics (Eclogues), the Georgics and the substantially completed Aeneid, the last being an epic-poem in the heroic mode, which comprised twelve books (as opposed to 24 in each of the epic poems by Homer) and became the Roman Empire's national epic.
