Recounts the story of a young English woman who is born in poverty in Newgate Prison and later becomes, by turn, a prostitute, a thief, a wife, and, finally, a wealthy penitent. Documents on criminal transport, contemporary criminal accounts and colonial laws give context to the novel.

Picaresque novel by Daniel Defoe, written in the form of a fictional autobiography of a reformed whore and felon first published in 1722. The novel recounts the adventures of a lusty and strong-willed woman who is compelled, from earliest childhood, to make her own way in 17th-century England.
