Details: Antique original oil portrait of a bernese mountain dog mid 19th century tondo inscribed “Philopena P.R. Westcottâ€, and painted on a concave panel mounted in a fabric covered wood frame.

This lot features an antique tondo portrait depicting a Bernese Mountain dog or Saint Bernard (or similar breed) gazing directly at the viewer. This unique tondo (round painting) employs many of the conventions of renaissance portraiture, including a deadpan subject gaze and a classic green gradient background contrasting with red cloth worn by its subject. The painting is on a concave fiber based panel that has been coated with plaster on the back, and is mounted in a 1†thick beveled wood frame, which is covered with velvet. The painting bears an inscription in the lower right, which appears to read "Philopena P. R. Westcott." In all likelihood “Philopena†is the dogs name and “P. R. Westcott is the artist.

The painting measures approximately 11.5" round and measures 17.5†x 17.5†with frame.

Condition / Notes: The antique painting shows well, with some moderate cracking of the paint, which is to be expected from its concave suface . The velvet covering the frame shows some fraying, particularly at the edges and has lost most of its face. Additionally there is some light soiling and moisture marking on one side of the velvet covering. The frame is solid and straight.
