Description
A very rare and unusual 10-station office intercom system with original working brass switches, manufactured ca. 1920 by Sterling Telephone and Electric Co. Mahogany wood box. Original brass fittings. Original brass plate on wood cabinet stamped REMOVE HANDSET BEFORE RINGING. The original Brass plate affixed beneath inscribed STERLING PRIMAX SYSTEM and separate brass plate stamped with manufacturer's notice to use the phone only with PRIMAX equipment. Other inscriptions on wooden box, including Patent Number. Sterling Telephone and Electric Company of Britain was originally a manufacturer of electrical parts but added telephones in the 1890's. One of their earliest customers was Britain's National Telephone Company. Their phones were built at a factory at Dagenham, although their catalogs show that many of their pre-World War I phones were built with components sourced from Ericsson. Sterling was part of the founding consortium of the British Broadcasting Company (BBC).
