(lot of 44) Venetian enameled glass table service, early 20th c., an authorized replica after the original owned by Prince Torlonia of Rome, hand-blown thin glass, parcel gilt, with finely hand-painted polychrome enamel, depicting a procession of figures, a Roman emperor rides in a horse-drawn chariot, an attendant holding a sign reading S.P.Q.R (Senatus Populusque Romanus, The Senate and People of Rome), including: (11) tall chalices, 5.75"h, 3"diam, (12) short chalices, (one) with repair at top of stem, 5.25"h, 2.75"diam, (17) champagne saucers/ coupes, 4.5"h, 4"diam, (3) tazze, 7.25"h, 6.75"diam, (1) center or punch bowl, 10"h, 11"diam; 12.25lbs total * Provenance: "Paintings & Art, Property from the Estate of the Late Walter Jennings" at Public Auction, October 25, 26, 1949, Parke-Bernet Galleries, lot 14-17, held on the premises of Burrwood at Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island; to J.A. Moore, College Station, Texas, October 1949, to our consignor. *Note: The princes Torlonia are an Italian noble family from Rome who acquired a huge fortune in the 18th and 19th centuries through administering the finances of the Vatican. *Notes: "The Parke-Bernet auction catalog states: "The original of this exquisite service is owned by the family of Prince Torlonia of Rome, who gave his authorization to have this replica made". Walter Jennings (1858-1933), Vice President Standard Oil Company, nephew of John D. Rockefeller.
