Description
One-of-a-kind item. Small handwritten journal from a sailor on the U. S. S. St. Paul (CA-73), the heavy cruiser that was the last ship to fire on Japan. It moored next to the Missouri, Admiral Halsey’s ship, during the signing of the surrender of Japan. The sailor describes the signing, which he witnessed through binoculars. The St. Paul was in many major engagements, which he lists at the rear of the journal. He writes about the St. Paul being in Halsey’s group because "…our press clippings of being marksmen had precede." Another entry: "A more powerful fleet of warships was never assembled than the four groups combined and was really a sight the day after the war was over and they all came in close while several planes took moving pictures of us." Another entry: "Hundreds of B29s and at least a couple thousand Navy planes (Corsairs, Avengers, Helldivers and Hellcats) flew overhead in formation." John Wayne was in several scenes shot on the St. Paul during filming of the war classic "Harm’s Way" (see photo). 40 pages of text including 12 pages of lists of engagements, kamikaze attics, bombardments and other wartime activities. In navy thick leather wraps. Minor rubbing to some extremities. 2.5 x 4. 40 pp.
