Description
20th c.
Carved wood, paint
Without stand: 53" x 14" x 14"
Provenance: Allan Stone Collection, New York
Note: This fragmentary Yoruba shrine figure is well carved, and shows signs of extensive traditional use.
This figure of a woman holding a bowl was made for a shrine dedicated to one of the Yoruba orisa (deities). She is at once an offering, a container for offerings, and the representation of a devotee presenting an offering. Shrine sculptures for the orisha are visual metaphors. They are not objects of devotion or thought of as sacred or spiritually powerful. Rather, they are images of devotees, of those who possess within their lives the power, (ashe) or spiritual authority (ori inu) of the orisha. This fragmentary Yoruba shrine figure is late, well carved, and shows signs of extensive traditional use.
