The Pende people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo carve numerous types of masks, most of which are associated with education and initiation rituals. Art styles vary widely. The Eastern Pende tend to work in the more abstract, geometric style seen here. This is a helmet mask called Gipogo. It would be kept in the chief's hut along with other valuable objects and only chiefs could dance with this powerful and high status mask. Charged with potent magical powers, it was danced to ward off illness or other threats to the community and also worn at initiation rites.
