Item Details
Description
20th c.
Cassowary bone and feathers, fiber
Without stand: 15 1/2" x 8" x 6"
Provenance: Allan Stone Collection, New York
The cassowary, New Guinea's flightless bird, is viewed as the mother of man in New Guinea mythology. At five feet high, it is second in size only to humans on the island. In both mythology and life, the cassowary is a large, dangerous and aggressive creature. Papuans believed that they became more aggressive and powerful when wielding daggers carved of cassowary bones.
