Dayak is a generic term used to categorize a quite large group of indigenous peoples of the island of Borneo. Many Dayaks carve anthropomorphic ancestral figures, generally called hamapatong. Hampatong are placed in front of longhouse entrances or other places where malevolent spirits are likely to appear. There is tremendous stylistic range in these sculptures.
